Couple listening calmly after a difficult conversation
Week 3

Understanding the cycle

We have a cycle, not a villain

Map pursue-and-withdraw patterns, triggers, protective reactions, and the difference between intent and impact.

01

What this lesson is about

Map pursue-and-withdraw patterns, triggers, protective reactions, and the difference between intent and impact.

02

Practice it at home

Map one recurring cycle: trigger → my move → your move → result. Give the cycle a neutral name that is not either spouse’s name.

Prepare first. Choose a calm time, silence notifications, and agree that either spouse may pause. The goal is honest connection, not a perfect conversation.

03

Talk together

  • What usually happens first in our cycle?
  • What am I trying to protect when I make my usual move?
  • What would interrupt the cycle by ten percent?

04

Carry one small habit

Use the phrase: “I think our cycle is starting. Can we slow it down?”

Ephesians 4:26–27 · James 1:19–20

Scripture anchor for reflection
Stop if this creates fear. No lesson should be used to force disclosure, sexual activity, forgiveness, reconciliation, or continued cohabitation. If either spouse feels afraid, trapped, monitored, coerced, or unable to answer freely, stop joint work and seek confidential specialized support through the safety pathway.
