Rebuilding touch after a difficult season

Physical and emotional intimacy grows where there is safety, freedom, curiosity, and mutual care. No one owes intimacy under pressure, and no couple needs to pretend difficult topics are simple. A practical guide for couples exploring rebuilding touch after a difficult season with honesty and grace.

01

Start with what is true

Physical and emotional intimacy grows where there is safety, freedom, curiosity, and mutual care. No one owes intimacy under pressure, and no couple needs to pretend difficult topics are simple. If this topic feels easy, use it to strengthen a good season. If it feels charged, slow down and speak from your own experience rather than presenting a case against your spouse. You can say, “What I notice in me is…” and “What I hope we can understand is…”. The first goal is not a decision or a solution. It is a more accurate picture of the two of you.

02

A practical way to practice

Set aside fifteen to twenty minutes when neither of you is rushing. Take turns speaking for two minutes while the other person reflects back the meaning and feeling they heard. Ask one curious question, then name one small action you are willing to practice this week. Keep the action observable: a time, a phrase, a ritual, or a boundary. Small practices are easier to repeat than dramatic promises.

03

Talk together

What part of rebuilding touch after a difficult season feels most familiar in our home? What do I wish you understood about my experience? What is one thing I can own without adding a “but”? What would a faithful next step look like for us over the next seven days? How will we return to this conversation if we get interrupted or overwhelmed?

04

A prayer for the road

God of truth and mercy, give us courage to be honest without cruelty, humility to listen without preparing a defense, and wisdom to choose the next faithful step. Teach us to receive one another as people made in Your image. Amen.

“Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.”
