Couple listening calmly after a difficult conversation
Week 4

Conflict skills that work at home

Gentle startups

Replace criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling with a softened beginning and responsibility-taking.

01

What this lesson is about

Replace criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling with a softened beginning and responsibility-taking.

02

Practice it at home

Rewrite two common complaints using: “I feel… about… and I need/request…”. Keep the request concrete and present-focused.

Prepare first. Choose a calm time, silence notifications, and agree that either spouse may pause. The goal is honest connection, not a perfect conversation.

03

Talk together

  • What words make me brace for attack?
  • How can I describe the problem without describing my spouse as the problem?
  • What responsibility is mine in this moment?

04

Carry one small habit

Begin hard conversations with a soft startup and one specific request.

Proverbs 15:1 · Ephesians 4:29

Scripture anchor for reflection
Stop if this creates fear. No lesson should be used to force disclosure, sexual activity, forgiveness, reconciliation, or continued cohabitation. If either spouse feels afraid, trapped, monitored, coerced, or unable to answer freely, stop joint work and seek confidential specialized support through the safety pathway.
